Council Member Diana Ayala inquires about time restrictions in domestic violence shelters, specifically the 30/60 day rules. Kameeza Nizam-Chattoo from Sanctuary for Families explains the typical timeline for shelter stays and the process for extensions.
- Crisis shelters allow stays up to 3 months, with possible extensions up to 180 days
- After 180 days, if not chosen for tier 2 shelter, clients often have to go to PATH or find alternative arrangements
- Limited housing voucher options for those leaving community-based shelters

Thank you.

One of the things that I I did wanna ask was about the the time restrictions, the the the 6 the 30, 60 day rules.
2:15:13
So HRA testified that well, the assessment testified that that does not apply in the like Biden shelters.
2:15:22
Is that true?
Kameeza Nizam-Chattoo
2:15:28
So for forpressure shelter, you're able to stay up to 3 months.
2:15:34
After that, we put in for extensions, and you're able to say up to 180 day.
2:15:39
After that, if you did not get chosen for a tier 2 shelter, which is done through HR rate, you know, taken into consideration, safe areas and household size.
2:15:49
If you're not chosen for that, then it's unfortunately path, or we speak to the clients.
2:15:54
So if if there's someone else that they could go, if it's family, because obviously, we don't wanna send our our families back into the homeless shelter system.
2:16:02
But unfortunately, that's usually the only thing they have because once you live in the community, you don't necessarily qualify for the housing vouchers.
2:16:11
So the only basically, the only options they have going to path.
