Derek Marcus and Jackson Chabot provide brief responses to Council Member Lee's concerns about parking and transportation in her district.

  • Marcus suggests tailoring the City of Yes approach based on proximity to well-served transit areas
  • Chabot points out that developers are likely to still build parking in areas with poor transit access
  • Lee acknowledges the points but expresses skepticism about relying solely on developer discretion
Derek Marcus

I'll address the parking question.
3:21:39
I think maybe a more logical solution rather than seeking a waiver.
3:21:43
Is to craft city of yes so that there's more tailored approaches.
3:21:48
Once you get further out from Manhattan and Green Point, Brooklyn Waterfront, Long Island City Queens, these districts, I think, are better served by transportation.
3:21:57
There's gotta be a way to thread the needle to address your concerns and address concerns of providing too much housing where it's not needed.
3:22:05
I'm sorry, too much parking where it's not needed.
Linda Lee
3:22:07
And and that may be true, which is why I brought up the the scale and all of that thing.
3:22:11
And, also, I will say that I I understand cars can be detrimental to health, but even as someone who drives an EV car and the electric grid not being capable of handling everything, also these are challenges that we're facing because people do wanna drive more EV cars in my district too.
Kevin C. Riley
3:22:26
Thank you, council member, Jackson.
Jackson Chabot
3:22:28
I just offered that, you know, as we heard from the evidence yesterday, as you hear from the developers, they'll still build parking in their district be in your district because they know that you don't have any trail rail access and that you don't have buses.
3:22:38
So there's copious amounts of evidence both from New York City that the Department of City Planning presented yesterday, as well as nationwide.
3:22:45
So happy to share that with John afterwards via email.
Linda Lee
3:22:47
Yeah.
3:22:47
No.
3:22:48
Totally.
3:22:48
And I would like to again have the good faith and belief that developers will do right per district wherever they're developing, but also you know, that's the same with city agencies as well.
3:22:58
So I'm just putting that out there.
Jackson Chabot
3:22:59
Totally.
3:22:59
I don't know.
3:23:00
For the recent metro North example is one where the developer is still building more parking than mandated.
Kevin C. Riley
3:23:05
Thank you.
3:23:06
Next, we're gonna have council member in need followed by Dinowicz.
