Council Member Hanif questions the disparity in housing development across different districts, citing specific numbers. Borough President Reynoso explains the challenges of addressing citywide issues due to member deference and the lack of a unified approach.

  • Reynoso identifies member deference as a major obstacle to citywide solutions
  • He emphasizes the interconnectedness of local community decisions and their impact on the entire city
  • Reynoso highlights the importance of the City of Yes proposal as a step towards addressing issues on a citywide level

Your continued support.
1:59:47
So there was a testimony right before you from CB 11 in the Bronx, and I was just looking up some numbers from 2018 to 2022.
1:59:56
276 units were built in totality, 10 were affordable units.
Antonio Reynoso
2:00:01
Yeah.
Shahana Hanif
2:00:01
Brooklyn, I mean, Court 6, which I represent, between that time frame, built 593 units, 1 affordable unit.
2:00:10
Mhmm.
2:00:10
This has, of course, changed due to the go on as resigning, bringing me to the top 10 Yeah.
2:00:15
And then Queen's Community Awards 9, 1011, all built less than 300 units each and less than 15 units of affordable units.
2:00:24
Could you just share why some of these communities have been able to get away
Charles Ny
2:00:29
Mhmm.
Shahana Hanif
2:00:30
Without building anything meaningful.
2:00:32
And despite having Euler, despite having community board representatives who are selected by Burrah Presidents with input from community council members.
2:00:45
Why is it that we are lagging behind?
Antonio Reynoso
2:00:48
So this is it's a perspective that I've been able to gain becoming Burrah President that is different than when I was a council member.
2:00:55
Member deference is one of the biggest problems we have when it comes to being able to build city wide adjustments or city wide solutions to city wide problems.
2:01:06
We are not a 5th them.
2:01:07
In any way, shape or form, these local communities think that what happens to them doesn't affect the rest of the city, and it's just not true.
2:01:13
What happens in your community affects the rest of the city of New York.
2:01:16
And it's hard for us to have comprehensive conversations about dealing with crisis, in a in a city wide level when member deference is king.
2:01:25
And and that is an issue that I think we should talk about and we should address.
2:01:29
Because I do think that the exercise that we're having here while in policy is very strong and the city of yes is the right thing to do.
2:01:37
I think something that is lost upon people that is even more deeply important is that we're about to pass a city wide tax amendment that is speaking to a city council that can come together to address an issue as a whole.
2:01:51
Not doing spot work or spot zoning or spot, you know, fixes one school or or one neighborhood.
2:01:58
Just actually coming together and doing something for the city as one.
2:02:01
Which I think is more valuable than even the proposal itself.
Kevin C. Riley
2:02:05
Thank you, council member, Anif.
2:02:07
Next, we're gonna have council member bureau filed by Osea and Ariola.
2:02:12
We've also been joined by chair Hanks.
