Paul Peart, Senior Pastor of New Testament Temple Church of God in the Bronx, strongly supports the City of Yes initiative. He shares his personal story of how New York City welcomed his mother 54 years ago, allowing her to eventually purchase a home and provide for her family.

  • Peart's church is willing to build up to 150 housing units for seniors and families, but is hindered by zoning change processes like ULURP
  • He argues that City of Yes would enable churches to build more affordable housing
  • Peart notes that many community members are moving away due to lack of affordable housing, especially seniors

Good afternoon.
6:08:30
Cox members.
6:08:31
Ladies and gentlemen.
6:08:33
My name is Paul Pearce, Senior Past of New Testament Temple, Turgard in the Bronx.
6:08:39
I am here to testify in strong support of the city of Yes initiative But first, I want to say thanks to New York City for saying yes to my mother 54 years ago when she fled hardship and abused and sought refuge in the USA.
6:08:58
She worked as a living living job here in for Italy.
6:09:04
She saved and was able to afford to purchase a single family home in the Northeast Bronx in 1978 for $34,000, providing housing for children.
6:09:18
Because New York said yes to my mother when New York app churches consider making their properties available to build affordable housing, we said yes.
6:09:31
New testament temple is willing to build up to 150 building units for seniors and families But the way is hindered by among things such things as the length and time and expense it would require to apply for zoning change via Euler, CTFS would be a remedy to enable churches to build more affordable housing for seniors and families.
6:10:05
I know personally that many members of our community are moving away to places like Connecticut, who keeps me, Maryland, etcetera, to find more affordable housing.
6:10:16
To them, New York has become a city of no.
6:10:20
Our seniors have a hard time filing of whole housing.
6:10:23
They are forced to move out of the community, and this present many difficulties representing the church of God in New York.
6:10:29
I vote yes to the city of yes.
