PUBLIC TESTIMONY

Testimony by Sunny Ng, Renter from North Brooklyn

89 sec

Sunny Ng, a long-time renter in North Brooklyn, expresses strong support for the City of Yes proposal, emphasizing its potential to address the housing crisis and make finding affordable housing easier. He particularly advocates for lifting parking minimums, arguing that mandatory parking requirements are unnecessary in a city with excellent public transit and unfairly subsidize car owners at the expense of non-drivers.

  • Ng views removing parking minimums as a step towards reducing car dependency and fighting climate change
  • He argues that developers should have the flexibility to determine parking needs based on market demands
  • Ng urges the council to approve the City of Yes proposal as it stands

Hello.
7:12:51
Good afternoon.
7:12:52
My name is Sunny Ng.
7:12:53
I've been a renter in North Brooklyn for over 10 years.
7:12:56
For anyone, my age or younger, and we know how expensive and how annoying it is to find housing because rent is so expensive.
7:13:04
The housing presence is very real, and I believe the city of yes will help.
7:13:09
And this is why I'm really excited for it to pass, and I really hope the council approves this proposal as it is.
7:13:15
While each of the proposal has their own merits, the one I'm most excited about is lifting parking in minimums.
7:13:20
For city for city with the best world, class public transit in the whole country.
7:13:24
It's pretty ridiculous that we have provisions that require parking in the first place.
7:13:29
This is necessarily absurd in transit which neighborhoods like the one I'm currently living right now.
7:13:33
Parking is definitely not free.
7:13:35
And it is a form of subsidy provided to those less than half of all households in the city that drive.
7:13:41
That causes pass on to renters and owners who may not need the space.
7:13:45
Removing parking minerals doesn't mean the city, doesn't allow parking space to build at all.
7:13:49
It just means that the market needs to figure out how much parking is actually needed instead of us managing what needs to happen.
7:13:56
The bottom line is developers should not be forced to build on-site parking if it doesn't make sense for the neighborhood.
7:14:03
Not to mention, we should be reducing card dependency if it is the city's prerogative to reduce our carbon footprint and to fight component change.
7:14:12
This proposal moves us in the right direction from this outdated policy and fully supported.
7:14:16
Thank you for your time, and I hope City of YES passes.
