Council Member Gutiérrez inquires about the progress of building external relationships for AI governance, as outlined in the AI Action Plan. Alex Foard from OTI explains the current state and goals of this initiative.

  • The initiative to build external relationships is still in progress, with some achievements and ongoing efforts
  • External relationships are defined as partnerships with academic institutions, civic society organizations, and the tech industry in New York City
  • The goal is to tap into external expertise to help develop better strategies and policies for AI governance
  • This is an ongoing process, not a one-time effort
  • OTI is open to forming partnerships and engaging with external experts as needs arise

Okay.
1:11:07
Thank you.
1:11:26
For initiative number 2, building external relationships.
1:11:29
In progress?
Alex Foard
1:11:31
A number of things that we've been able to do, but obviously continuing to do more.
Jennifer Gutiérrez
1:11:34
Okay.
1:11:35
But so, like, in not done.
Alex Foard
1:11:38
Yes.
1:11:38
Correct.
1:11:39
There's still some things that we still wanna do there.
Jennifer Gutiérrez
1:11:41
What how do you all define external relationship?
Alex Foard
1:11:44
So we wanted to when we were drafting the action plan, we really wanted to not miss the opportunity to tap into the academic institutions that New York has, the civic society organizations, that the city has, our our own tech industry.
1:11:59
We wanted to be very clear that there's external views that really could sort of help us come up with better strategy policy, etcetera.
1:12:09
So, really, you know, anywhere we can find opportunities to partner with an academic institution.
Jennifer Gutiérrez
1:12:13
You got Vicky Pelley.
1:12:14
You know?
Alex Foard
1:12:15
Yeah.
1:12:15
Exactly.
1:12:16
That would be yeah.
1:12:17
Exactly.
1:12:18
That sort of thing is a very much what we wanna be able to do so that we can tap into expertise outside of our our own walls.
Jennifer Gutiérrez
1:12:26
And are you all thinking about the external relationship development as, like, a I mean, you you're that you are kind of touching on this as often as you are looking to release your progress reports.
1:12:41
It's just like
Alex Foard
1:12:42
Ongoing for sure.
1:12:43
Yeah.
1:12:43
Both external engagement and the public engagement are intended to have sort of these ongoing acts activities.
1:12:49
So our advisory network, which exists to help provide to structure some of that support, is not a a one and done.
1:12:55
We we engage them periodically to be able to to inform on a number of different leads.
Jennifer Gutiérrez
1:12:59
And I guess, I know you said it's it's ongoing.
1:13:01
And is there a is there a particular phase work that we are in now.
1:13:07
For building external relationships, is there anything that you can highlight kind of that you are working on right now in this piece?
Alex Foard
1:13:13
Sure.
