Council Member Rivera asks about the most significant healthcare access issues in New York City. Dr. Michelle Morse responds by outlining seven main areas driving life expectancy loss in the city, as identified in the Healthy NYC campaign.

  • Key areas include cardiovascular disease, screenable cancer mortality, black maternal mortality, COVID-related mortality, gun violence, and overdose deaths.
  • These issues are described as the biggest drivers of preventable mortality and lowered life expectancy in New York City.
  • Dr. Morse emphasizes the opportunity for partnership and action in addressing these areas.

And for answering our questions, can you tell us what are the most significant health care acts assess issues that exist in New York City at this time?
Dr. Michelle Morse
1:21:18
Thank you for the question.
1:21:20
This is a very expansive question.
1:21:22
I will
Carlina Rivera
1:21:22
try to be as precise as you can.
Dr. Michelle Morse
1:21:27
I would say that some of the big challenges that we see are the drivers that have led to life expectancy being lost in New York City over recent years.
1:21:36
We developed and launched the healthy NYC campaign under Commissioner Vassen in partnership with the chairs.
1:21:44
And that campaign outlines 7 main areas of life expectancy drivers.
1:21:51
So I was I'll just list them very briefly because I do think they cover some of the most important areas for both public health and healthcare action.
1:21:59
So it's around cardiovascular disease.
1:22:01
We look to reduce the rates of cardiovascular disease by 2030.
1:22:06
We also are looking to reduce the screenable cancer mortality rates.
1:22:11
We're looking at black maternal mortality, which is one of the highest rates in the country.
1:22:17
We also are specifically looking at COVID related mortality as a key driver, and then we're looking at gun violence related mortality.
1:22:26
And then finally overdose deaths.
1:22:28
So those seven areas are the biggest drivers of preventable mortality and are the biggest causes of the lowered life expectancy that we've seen in New York City.
1:22:39
So we see lots of opportunity for partnership and act in for healthcare access and beyond in those seven areas.
