Council Member Powers asks both candidates to identify what they believe is the largest challenge facing the public health system, particularly H+H. Both Dr. Espiritu and Ms. Rodriguez provide their perspectives on the most pressing issues.

  • Dr. Espiritu emphasizes improving accessibility to healthcare services for all New Yorkers
  • Focus on enhancing primary healthcare access to improve prevention and reduce disease burden
  • Ms. Rodriguez highlights the need to ensure patients use primary care services instead of relying on hospital emergency departments
  • Both candidates stress the importance of linking patients to appropriate care and follow-up services
  • Addressing the challenges of providing care to uninsured individuals is seen as a significant issue

Can you tell us what you feel right now is the largest challenge facing?

What do you feel is the largest challenge for you?

I think one one big challenge would be just making making making things as accessible as possible to to all New Yorkers, being able to provide get them into primary health care, you know, to begin with, which goes along the way in terms of prevention.

And Indian sort of cost cutting if you can if you can get them into adequate primary care, get them low cost accessible health insurance so that a lot of the chronic disease burden or more acute disease burden can be decreased, and we can really maximize our you know, the the capabilities and other other efficiencies that put more resources towards that can, you know, improve our the rest of our infrastructure and and quality.
Vanessa Rodriguez

the community, the people that come into the hospitals, are getting the primary care and they're not using the hospital setting as a walk like, walk in.
0:25:21
But being able to get the care, if they are inpatient, get the services that they need, and are linked externally, I think that because we do have a lot of people who are not insured that that may be one of the biggest challenge just to to assure that everyone is getting the care they need appropriately and after care.
