Captain Papavlasopoulos describes NYPD's community engagement initiatives, particularly the 'Coffee with a crime prevention officer' program, aimed at educating older adults about scams and crime prevention.

  • NYPD partners with local businesses like McDonald's and Starbucks to offer free coffee to older adults.
  • Crime prevention officers meet with older adults one-on-one in these settings.
  • Officers provide informational materials about the latest scams and protection strategies.
  • These initiatives are a response to crimes targeting older adults and have received positive feedback from communities.
  • Large retail stores have reached out to be part of these initiatives, showing community support.
  • Commissioner Cortés-Vázquez emphasizes the importance of the partnership between NYPD and the dedicated older adult liaison in making these initiatives possible and effective.

Just to add just one more thing to that.
0:54:42
Despite these crimes that are occurring, working with local city agencies, the crime prevention division also partners out due to these horrible events.
0:54:51
We were able to to get McDonald's Starbucks, and we would come up with initiatives like this one right here.
0:54:58
Coffee with a crime prevention officer.
0:55:01
McDonald's Starbucks were offering free coffee to all older adults where crampavinton officers would actually go early morning at 9 o'clock, where we would actually look to see where we would find older adults' locations as such.
0:55:14
Where we would sit down with the aldosterone adults one on one having a cup of coffee.
0:55:19
And then as we're sitting and talking with them at these local establishments, we would give them informational material, what are the latest scams, what are the things that we're looking for, what can they do to protect themselves from the latest crimes that are occurring throughout the city.
0:55:33
So despite these crimes that we've been seeing, we've been seeing positive feedback from the actual communities in big box store retail, in response to these crimes, we've they've they've been actually contacting us to be a part of anything that we could do to help.
0:55:49
And these type of initiatives that you see across the city are some of the positive things that have been going on.
Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez

I wanna say for the record.
0:55:56
Mhmm.
0:55:57
It is that type of partnership between the NYPD, the dedicated older adult liaison that is making this possible, making the possible to look at patterns of crime, making it possible to come up for strategies to address those patterns of crime, as chief morale has said.
0:56:17
There are certain areas that we still have not delved into.
0:56:20
Like cybersecurity.
0:56:22
That's a bit beyond some of us, which is what we leave to the DA's.
0:56:25
But I I want to go for the record to say, had these partnership not existed?
0:56:31
I can say that 3, 4 years ago, The relationship was there.
0:56:35
We were doing training with officers and working with the NYPD, but this partnership has really accelerated and really has become a unified force to address this pervasive issue of elder abuse.

I would love to maybe we could follow-up and and partner with council members directly to help us inform our constituencies of of some of these especially as we approach the holiday season.
0:57:03
