Council Member Rita C. Joseph inquires about the possibility of middle school students attending only the afternoon portion of Summer Rising. DYCD officials explain the current policy and procedures.
- Students sign up for the full day of Summer Rising by default
- Families can request a modified schedule with a signed parent letter due to safety concerns
- Modified schedules are allowed but not encouraged
- The full-day program is preferred, but exceptions can be made
- There hasn't been a significant uptake on the modified schedule option

I have a question from middle school student who said if they're not mandated for the morning portion of summer rising, can they just come in the afternoon?
2:11:13

Yes.
2:11:19
This is a hot burning question.
2:11:20
When you sign up for for summarizing, you sign up for the full day of summarizing.
2:11:25
However, in every year of the past few years, we have communicated to families and to CBOs that if you wanna have a modified schedule, you'll have to have a letter signed from your parent because there's a safety issue here.
2:11:38
If you're if you're a middle school student and you're not showing up till 12, we wanna make sure that your parent knows about that.
2:11:45
So we we do allow for that kind of exception.
2:11:48
We don't encourage it.
2:11:49
We want you to be signing up for the full day.
2:11:51
We want you with us for the full day, but we will allow it.
2:11:54
CBOs know that, families know that.
2:11:57
And frankly, I don't have a data on this in front of me, but I don't think we've had a lot of uptick on that opportunity.
