Council Member Brooks-Powers asks about SBS and DCLA's efforts to engage with Outer Borough Communities, particularly in Southeast Queens and transit deserts, to bring cultural programming to these neighborhoods. Haris Khan responds with SBS's approach.
- SBS encourages council members to connect them with local nonprofits in underserved areas
- The department aims to make nonprofits aware of all grant opportunities
- SBS considers neighborhoods with less previous investment in their grant criteria
- The goal is to expand the reach of SBS programs to as many neighborhoods and boroughs as possible

Okay.

My last question for you is, can SBS and DCLA elaborate on how they are engaging with Outer Burrow Communities, particularly in Southeast Queens and other transit deserts to bring cultural programming to these neighborhoods?

So And
Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
1:14:33
I will and I will start by saying that I know that there's activation in our new plaza in Farrakaway, which is great.
1:14:40
We'll love to see some more activation with things on the mainland side, like, in, you know, in the speaker council member will use in my district in the greater Southeast Queens area.
Haris Khan
1:14:51
So council member, we would encourage you and and any member that has any nonprofits that work in any part of your district where you feel like there there hasn't been enough investment in some of this public space activation to please let us know what the nonprofits are, connect us with those nonprofits.
1:15:06
We wanna make sure they're aware of every single grant opportunity that the department puts out, and they can compete for competitive applications.
1:15:13
And and and inherent built into our criterias is consideration for neighborhoods where we have not done work in the past.
1:15:20
So we're trying our best to expand the reach of our division and the limited funding we get sometimes to as many neighborhoods, as many boroughs as possible.
