Chief Evan Suchecki explains the maintenance process and turnaround times for FDNY ambulances.
- Turnaround time depends on the reason for the ambulance being out of service
- For preventative maintenance, the target is a maximum of 2 weeks
- Mechanical issues, warranty work, or recalls may take longer depending on the extent of the problem
- Some issues are handled in-house, while others require sending the vehicle out for warranty work
- The department was recently approved for 12 new hires of auto mechanics and auto service workers

And what are we doing to get those extra ambulances that are out of service, back in service?
0:33:18
And what's the turnaround?
0:33:19
Once they go out of service, and they need some type of mechanical attention.
0:33:24
What's the turnaround to get them back on the road?
Evan Suchecki
0:33:27
So the turnaround is really dependent on what the reason they're out of service for.
0:33:30
If it's our preventative maintenance cycle, we shoot for 2 weeks as a max and we do a full safety inspection and ensure that there are no mechanical issues that are brought to our attention during that.
0:33:40
If it's something other than that, meaning out of service for a mechanical, for a warranty issue, a recall, it really depends on the extent of the issue and whether we're handling it in house or it's a warranty issue that we have to send out.
0:33:53
So it really does vary.
0:33:54
But as far as the PM, we try to turn those around very quickly, the preventative maintenance.

Would one of the reasons why they don't get back out is because you lack the resources to fix them?
Evan Suchecki

Our resources for staffing are always welcome.
0:34:07
We are, you know, getting the job done with what we have.
0:34:09
We were just approved for another 12 hires of auto mechanics and auto service workers, but any additional staffing would always benefit the bureau, of course.
