Chief Evan Suchecki explains current ambulance siren technology and potential innovations being explored. He discusses the use of low-frequency 'rumbler' sirens and custom-made sirens to address noise concerns while ensuring effectiveness.
- The 'rumbler' siren is a low-frequency siren used in conjunction with the standard siren
- FDNY uses custom-made sirens to balance effectiveness with noise pollution concerns
- The department is exploring new technologies, including devices that could transmit signals to other vehicles' applications to notify them of approaching emergency vehicles

1:20:34
Yeah.
1:20:34
As far as the the rumbler siren, what that is, it's a low frequency siren.
1:20:39
So it works in conjunction with the actual siren itself.
1:20:43
You know, we feel that we're using the most appropriate siren, but we are always looking at the next advancements and the most innovative technology for the safety of our members and the safety of those around us.
1:20:54
So we're always looking to explore.
1:20:55
But at the end of the day, for EMS operations, we ultimately need to get to the job.
1:21:00
We also do have, you know, a custom made siren for us.
1:21:03
So to kind of eliminate some of the concerns with the pollution and the whaling whole hours of the night.
1:21:10
So we feel like currently we are doing everything, but are exploring options.
Gale Brewer
1:21:14
More than exploring options mean, are you discussing it, like, with siren companies, are you having con the union, I know likes the current I understand that.
1:21:23
But please describe to me current discussions what that means.
1:21:28
Now it's not just the people complaining, it's also the traffic not moving.
1:21:32
I don't know if there's some other way to get the traffic moving new siren.
1:21:36
This is, you know, we're serious.
1:21:37
I don't know, but they don't move.
Evan Suchecki
1:21:39
We work with multiple different siren companies who are always advancing their technologies similar to, you know, CAD system as well.
1:21:46
So they feel like if they could come out with a different tone or a different option for siren, that may be more effective in traffic.
1:21:52
We're also looking at other options where we could possibly plug devices into our vehicles, which may transmit to 3rd party vehicles and applications that could notify you that an ambulance or an emergency vehicle is approaching.
1:22:05
So these are all different types of options that we are looking at.
Gale Brewer
1:22:08
Okay.
