Chief Michael Fields explains how FDNY is addressing unique challenges in high-need communities, focusing on language barriers and building access issues:
- For language barriers, EMS crews use phone applications and the AT&T hotline for interpretation.
- Video conferencing applications are now available for visual communication with interpreters.
- For building access, FDNY advocates for all buildings to be up to code and maintains reports on access difficulties.
- FDNY is planning to implement AI technology to provide crews with information about previous visits to locations, including any history of violence against EMS.
- This new technology will be part of the upcoming new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
- The approach demonstrates FDNY's efforts to use technology to improve response efficiency and crew safety in challenging environments.

Is unfortunate.

I feel like if we had the services that would not happen.

In in respects to language, our crews that arrive at the location, they have phone phones with applications on them.
1:02:12
That are able to navigate language barriers.
1:02:15
We can utilize the AT and T hotline.
1:02:17
We can utilize applications now where we can actually video conference with the patients so that we can have somebody to interpret the language.
1:02:26
And respects the buildings.
1:02:27
Buildings are getting taller.
1:02:30
We advocate as best as possible to make sure that all buildings are up to cold.
1:02:35
And, you know, we keep the fire operations sides, keep sit reports, which is a breakdown of any type of difficulties they may have had at those locations.
1:02:45
As future progress, we're gonna utilize AI technology so that when I arrive at a location, I can look to see how often has EMS been at that location?
1:02:55
Do we have any patients in that location that have been on violent to EMS in the past?
1:03:00
So we're building off of technology.
1:03:02
And that will come onboard when we get our new CAD system in the future.
