Council Member Pierina Sanchez inquires about the future enforcement approach for illegal units if the proposed legislation becomes law. Deputy Commissioner Kim Darga explains the approach under the temporary authorization program.
- Homeowners enrolled in the temporary authorization program will not face vacate orders during the enrollment period
- The program aims to put properties on a path to legalization
- To enroll, properties must pass basic safety standards through an inspection
- Penalties may be deferred or waived during the temporary status period

Moving moving forward, if if this bill becomes law, the zoning tax amendment becomes law, would homeowners still be penalized with with fines and enforcement, or would they be asked to attempt to legalize the structure?

So, an owner that is enrolled in the temporary authorization program, we will not enforce vacates during that time frame.
1:08:37
Right?
1:08:37
The idea is to actually put these properties on a road to legalization.
1:08:44
In order to enroll, they have to pass some basic, safety standards.

So there is an inspection of the property.

And we can defer waive penalties, during the temporary legalization or temporary status period as well.
