Christine Quinn reveals that the National Guard is visiting shelters to collect data on migrants, raising concerns about harassment, fear, and data protection. Council Members express alarm at this practice and its implications.

  • National Guard repeatedly visits shelters until they've interviewed all migrants
  • This practice is described as harassing and terrifying for shelter residents
  • Concerns raised about where the collected data goes and whether federal agencies have access
  • Shelter providers feel pressured to comply due to contract risks
Christine Quinn
2:53:25
And throughout this entire time, we've seen the administration take a very, anti or negative posture towards the migrants.
2:53:36
Right?
2:53:36
And really stand in a place.
2:53:38
And not so much in the functioning of the agencies, but in the mayor's statements about the migrants.
2:53:44
So when you take when you have a new challenge and you take a posture that the challenge or the people involved in it are kind of bad and we have to get rid of them, then you don't engage in planning and organizing to try to address the problem and help the people.
2:54:00
So you lose critical time and critical, attention.
2:54:05
So that is what we've seen here, not embracing a reality, one we don't want, one we don't like, but nonetheless, embracing a reality.
2:54:13
I also, just on the data, wanted to to add a point I forgot.
2:54:17
You know, the National Guard is going to shelters asking people questions.
2:54:22
That's what I'm saying.
2:54:23
And so at Sonia Sotomayor, for example, they come, they see however many people they see, they come back, they come back, they come back until they're done.
2:54:32
And then when they finish at Sonos Sotomayor that's what we named the shelter, Sonos Sotomayor.
2:54:35
Shelter.
2:54:36
Sorry.
2:54:37
Then when they leave that, shelter that's just migrants, they go to another shelter that's just migrants.
2:54:42
And then eventually, they'll come to the other shelters we have that have a mix of clients, and we'll have to make the migrant clients available.
2:54:49
That is incredibly, a, harassing, b, terrifying, and 3, where's all that data?
2:54:57
And do the feds get it?
2:54:58
How does it get protected?
Diana Ayala
2:54:59
What legally requires you to identify
Christine Quinn
2:55:05
They'll come with names of people.
2:55:07
We don't identify like Mary Smith on the 4th floor.
2:55:11
They come with needs of people they wanna see.
2:55:12
And the city knows that in that one shelter, Sonia Sotomayor, they're all migrants.
2:55:19
Now people cannot go, but eventually they just keep coming.
2:55:23
And people risk their contracts if they don't, you know, let them have a room to set up in, etcetera.
Alexa Avilés
2:55:30
Can you say that one more time?
2:55:31
You risk your contract every time.
Christine Quinn
2:55:33
You know, if you if these folks if National Guard comes, the the worry groups are going providers are going to have.
2:55:39
The worry is that you might risk your contract.
Alexa Avilés
2:55:41
Got it.
2:55:42
Got it.
2:55:42
And and currently, there are National Guard Yes.
2:55:46
Coming to shelters.
Christine Quinn
2:55:47
Yes.
Alexa Avilés
2:55:48
And how often have you been Until
Christine Quinn
2:55:49
they finish.
Alexa Avilés
2:55:51
With a predetermined list of individuals.
2:55:53
And you're required by contract.
Christine Quinn
2:55:55
Well, I mean, you're you're required, kind of, to participate.
2:55:58
There's nothing in the contracts that says it's the National Guard comes, because nobody anticipated that.
Alexa Avilés
2:56:03
Got it.
Christine Quinn
2:56:04
You know, the thing I hope the city is doing now is prepare if we don't know it's hard to say, President-elect Trump is going to do the mass deportations with the military.
Gale A. Brewer
2:56:16
We don't know
