Council Member Abreu and DSNY officials discuss the department's ability to inspect inside private buildings for recycling compliance.

  • DSNY clarifies that they don't have the authority to enter private property for inspections

Would DSNY I mean, it's DSNY can go to I understand that that's a legal limitation, but DSNY can go inside businesses.
1:48:09
Is that is that an authority that DSNY would like to be able to have access to private buildings?

Issue, and I don't know if the 1st deputy commissioner knows whether it's an issue of legal authority or an issue of staff capacity, but it's something that has not been part of our policy to be able to go in and and inspect trash rooms inside them.
Shaun Abreu

Because I think that's a huge, like, missed opportunity for increasing compliance.
Javier Lohan

I believe it's more of a staff capacity issue.
1:48:32
It's very, time intensive and requires to gain access to the building, so that's part of the challenge we have with it.
1:48:38
But it is something that we would look to focus on.

Are there are there inspections being done currently for recycling compliance, for instance, in in buildings?
Joshua Goodman

Only at the curb, not inside.
