Council Member Crystal Hudson, chair of the committee on aging, introduces two pieces of legislation as part of the Age in Place 2.0 package. She explains the background of the Age in Place initiative and the specific details of Intro 1025-A and Intro 1053-A, which aim to support older adults in New York City.

  • Intro 1025-A focuses on providing information about employment, volunteer opportunities, and workforce programs for older New Yorkers.
  • Intro 1053-A proposes a feasibility study for creating physical locations where older adults can access information about NYC aging services and programming.
  • Hudson emphasizes the importance of supporting older adults to age in place with dignity and expanding NYC aging's reach beyond current networks.

Good morning, everyone.
0:00:20
I'm council member Crystal Hudson, chair of the committee on aging, and my pronouns are sheher.

Today, the committee is voting on the following legislation which I've sponsored, proposed introduction number 1025 a, in relation to the provision of information regarding employment discrimination and older adult workforce programs, and proposed introduction number 1053 a, in relation to a study and report on the feasibility of creating older adult information points.

We are joined today by council members Banks, Lee, Mealy and Shulman.

Last week, I was proud to announce Age in Place 2.0 after working with groups like ARP, LiveOn New York, the Asian American Federation, members of the New York City Council, and other key stakeholders to identify issues facing older adults and brainstorm brainstorm solutions, we advanced the age in place legislative package last session.
0:01:15
We successfully passed 7 of 10 bills in that package including laws to expand right to council to all older adults, require universal design in all city funded housing, expand access to telemedicine and telehealth devices, and expand culturally appropriate programming at older adult centers.
0:01:31
With age in place 2.0, we're fighting for even more.
0:01:34
Stronger interagency coordination to support older adults across issue areas, greater meal options, more tech support to adapt to technological developments, and policies to lay the groundwork for universal elder care across the 5 boroughs.
0:01:47
The bills we are voting on today, introductions 1025 and 1053, are critical components of age in place 2.0.
0:01:55
Intro 1025 would ensure that older adults receive information and resources regarding employment and volunteer opportunities as well as workforce program opportunities through NYC aging.
0:02:05
When older New Yorkers want or need to work or when they simply wanna give back to their communities, we should provide them with the information and resources necessary to achieve their goals.
0:02:15
Meanwhile, intro 1053 would require NYC aging to conduct a feasibility study regarding the creation of older adult information points.
0:02:23
Older adult information points would serve as physical locations where older adults can receive information concerning NYC aging services and programming.
0:02:31
We should strive to meet our older adults where they are in the community, but we should also think creatively about integrating the vital services the city provides into everyday routines.
0:02:41
Older adult information points would allow older adults in their surrounding circles to, for example, learn about benefits administered through NYC aging on their way to the grocery store or coming home from a medical appointment.
0:02:52
This legislation is an exciting step towards expanding NYC aging's footprint and reaching folks beyond the current network of older adult centers and naturally occurring retirement communities.
0:03:02
I will keep fighting to ensure that every older adult can age in place with dignity, and the bills we are voting today as part of the age in place 2.0 package will help move our city in that direction.
0:03:14
A huge thank you to the advocates for their thought partnership on these initiatives.
0:03:18
Thank you to the members of the aging committee who have joined us today.
0:03:21
And I'd also like to thank my staff, Casey Addison and Andrew Wright, and aging committee staff, Christopher Pepe, Chloe Rivera, Julia Jeremes, and Samuel Hamid.
0:03:29
I will now turn it over to the clerk to call the roll.
