Council Member Bottcher inquires about other municipalities' approaches to 911 texting, particularly those that have expanded beyond the 'call if you can, text if you can't' model. Deputy Commissioner Barbera provides a limited response, focusing on New York City's current capabilities and future plans.

  • Deputy Commissioner Barbera cannot comment specifically on other municipalities' services
  • New York City's current text-to-911 is described as an 'interim system'
  • Future enhancements are planned with the implementation of Next Generation 911

Are there other cities that have expanded on this to make it faster and easier to correspond via text?
Robert Barbera

I wouldn't be able to comment specifically to any difference in service that other municipalities are, have implemented.

I will say that, from our experience, since Texas 911 has gone live, that, we're able to support this as an interim system.

And, again, once we get to the next generation 911, we can look to build upon that.

It's something that the legacy 911 system cannot support today in terms of future enhancements.
