Chancellor Matos Rodriguez describes CUNY's efforts to provide training and information on Title VI and antisemitism. This includes producing a manual, video for students, and additional training materials. Council Member Dinowitz questions the effectiveness of these efforts and whether they are mandatory for students.

  • CUNY has produced a manual and video for students on Title VI
  • Discussion on whether training is mandatory for students
  • Some campuses require anti-bias training for student leaders
Felix Matos Rodriguez

Our voluntary resolution with OCR, we produce, a manual, we produce a video for students in addition to the additional training to provide on title 6, to provide all these clarifications and have the widest amount of information out there, about the what's included on the title 6.
Eric Dinowitz
1:29:22
That's required by the students to do that training?
1:29:26
Are students required to do that training or to get that information?
Felix Matos Rodriguez
1:29:30
Students are not required, but it is available on the website, and we're having all the student affairs campuses use that.
1:29:36
We've also some of our campuses are also for student leaders, are including, anti bias, training before they can become officers.
1:29:45
Some of the campus are doing that too.
1:29:47
So all this part of a campaign to make sure that as many people are informed about what's included under title 6.
Eric Dinowitz
1:29:54
I'll just I'll just read NYU's.
1:29:55
It says using code words like Zionist does not eliminate the possibility that your speech violates the NDAH policy.
1:30:04
For many Jewish people, Zionism is part of their Jewish identity.
1:30:09
That's just one model from NYU.
1:30:12
Is that not something CUNY can also affirmatively do given the crisis that we're in?
1:30:16
Can they not can you not affirmatively make a pronouncement like that and publish those very clearly for all campuses to see?
Felix Matos Rodriguez
1:30:25
Well, again, we'll we'll look at at the examples from other campuses.
1:30:28
We feel that the clarification that we have given, you know, in the examples, if you keep, you know, reading that NYU example, some of the examples that are there, on sinusoid would clearly violate our code of conduct at at at CUNY, not including them, not permitting them to to to attend things which are some of the things that appear in the NYU one.
Eric Dinowitz
1:30:50
I think what I'm asking is is something very simple, is if you can affirm with examples, some of which are given by models of private university and models of the federal government, if CUNY can do the same.
Felix Matos Rodriguez
1:31:03
We certainly look into it as we continue to revise our policies.
1:31:06
Yes.
Eric Dinowitz
1:31:08
Well, can you I mean, can you do it?
1:31:10
I mean, I well, I don't need you to to to look into it.
1:31:12
I mean, it's very clearly the law.
1:31:13
All I'm asking you is to share what you what the law is with students to make sure they know And
Felix Matos Rodriguez
1:31:19
can we
Eric Dinowitz
1:31:19
what the policies are, not just for them, but for people who are thinking of violating policies.
Felix Matos Rodriguez
1:31:24
And we have made all our policies, you know, available to the students.
Eric Dinowitz
1:31:32
Say that again?
Felix Matos Rodriguez
1:31:33
That all the student our policies are on the website.
1:31:36
Students, when they register in orientation, they're getting all the information, students who participate in clubs.
1:31:41
All these things are credited to title 6.
1:31:43
We've been sharing with the students and expanding our efforts to be able to communicate and make sure that people know.
