Council Member Linda Lee inquires about collaboration between DOHMH, NYPD, and community organizations in responding to traumatic events. Jamie Neckles from DOHMH explains their approach to community outreach and crisis response.

  • DOHMH responds to requests for joint operations with other city agencies to provide health strategy and outreach
  • Community-based organizations (CBOs) are leveraged to extend the department's reach
  • There is no direct referral system from the police department to DOHMH at this point
  • Joint operations occur when larger community-level issues arise
  • DOHMH proposes using brochures and palm cards to give people the choice to reach out for help when they want to
  • The approach emphasizes giving individuals control over when and how they seek support following traumatic events
Linda Lee
0:41:56
Okay.
0:41:57
And then Right.
0:41:58
So that's good.
0:41:59
And then, do you all work with other providers in the community that are non school based, just to sort of because I would imagine something, that's more traumatic that happens community wide, is Is there, I guess, a natural network of people that you reach out to, whether it's non profit organizations?
0:42:11
Because I would think with the Cure Violence stuff, there's a lot of other partners that you probably work with.
0:42:22
And then, just if you could sort of discuss, what the partnership looks like, I guess, between DOHMH and NYPD, for example.
0:42:33
Is there reporting that they all reach out to you on, for example, once something like this happens in the community?
0:42:40
And then does that get translated into outreach?
0:42:43
Or I guess, I'm just trying to figure out, in terms of the flow of communication, how that works when incidences like that happen.
Jamie Neckles
0:42:52
Sure.
0:42:52
So, the health department, we we respond to requests for joint operations with other city agencies, to provide, you know, the health strategy and outreach, with community members and using CBOs to, sort of, leverage our reach.
0:43:10
I'll, I'll leave it at that.
0:43:12
I think does that answer your question?
0:43:14
I wanna pause for a moment.
Linda Lee
0:43:15
Oh, no.
0:43:16
Yeah.
0:43:16
It I I guess.
0:43:17
But, because I know that there's joint task force, you know, forces within the administration, for example.
0:43:24
Mhmm.
0:43:24
But I guess I'm just wondering in real time.
0:43:26
Right?
0:43:26
If there's an incident that happens in the community, how does that flow of communication usually work?
0:43:30
And how quick is the response usually?
Jamie Neckles
0:43:35
So, the the police department is not making referrals to the health department at this point.
0:43:39
There will be joint operations when a, sort of, a larger community level issue is is needed.
0:43:44
I think what we're proposing here is is, you know, using brochures and palm cards to give people the choice to reach out when they want to.
0:43:52
Not everybody wants somebody knocking on their door, in a at a, you know, given time frame subsequent to a traumatic event.
0:44:00
Right?
0:44:00
People process these things differently.
0:44:02
We want to give them control over the situation.
Linda Lee
0:44:04
Yeah.
0:44:04
Because they may see the prom card at that moment and say, This is not for me.
0:44:08
And then a month or a week later, realize that they wanna reach out to somebody.
0:44:11
And I guess my question is, how do we just make sure that they have that in their hand or have that knowledge in their hand?
0:44:16
Because, you know, in that moment, they're probably not even thinking about it.
0:44:20
But, you know, when it sort of settles, you know, how do we make sure that they have access to those services?
0:44:25
So, okay.
0:44:27
Okay.
0:44:30
Council Council member Joseph, do you have questions you wanted to ask on your bill?
0:44:33
Okay.
0:44:38
Yes.
0:44:38
Sorry.
0:44:39
Or Okay.
