Council Member Linda Lee inquires about Intro 996, which proposes developing and offering peer-to-peer mental health training programs in schools. Dr. Erica Lynne Smith from DOHMH discusses the recently released teen mental health first aid program and its implementation.

  • A SAMHSA grant-funded organization will provide training for both adult and teen mental health first aid
  • Teen mental health first aid has just been developed and released
  • The program teaches teens how to listen without judgment and where to seek further clinical mental health services if needed
  • Formal information dissemination about the program has not yet been implemented due to its recent release

Thank you.
0:31:25
And then, sorry, I'm just jumping around a little bit.
0:31:29
But, for intro 996, which is, Council Member Stevens' bill, to develop and offer peer to peer mental health training programs in schools, How so have you I'm I'm sorry.
0:31:44
I think I missed this during the testimony.
0:31:45
But did you say that you have the mental the student led mental health first aid trainings?
Dr. Erica Lynne Smith
0:31:50
Yeah.
0:31:50
So, it's similar to the adult mental health first aid that that was sponsored a while ago.
0:31:57
It's still we have an organization that received a SAMHSA grant, that will provide training for both, but teen mental health first aid has just been released and developed, using the same principles, which is basically teaching, teens on how to listen with no judgment, and also where to go should needed further, sort of, clinical mental health services.
Linda Lee
0:32:28
Okay.
0:32:29
And then how are the students informed about the programs and if they wanna take that training or if they wanna participate in other, student led programs?
Dr. Erica Lynne Smith
0:32:40
We haven't done formal information, because it I mean, it literally just just came out.
Linda Lee
0:32:49
Got it.
UNKNOWN
0:32:51
Okay.
0:32:51
So we would have
Dr. Erica Lynne Smith
0:32:52
to talk to our New York City Public School colleagues around what that would look like.
