Council Member Mercedes Narcisse inquires about the sufficiency of current funding levels to achieve Healthy NYC goals and what additional resources might be needed. DOHMH Acting Health Commissioner Michelle Morse explains the department's approach to resource allocation for Healthy NYC initiatives.

  • No specific line item budget for Healthy NYC, but integration of goals into various bureaus and divisions
  • Chronic disease bureau budget of about $17 million per year
  • Emphasis on aligning resources with the seven drivers of lowered life expectancy
  • Commitment to working towards the goal of 83 years life expectancy by 2030

Thank you for asking that question, chair Narcisse.
0:55:58
We always look forward to partnering with council around making sure, that our goals are achievable and that resources are adequate.

There is not a line item budget in the health department budget for Healthy NYC per se, but we really do integrate the work towards the goals of Healthy NYC into the work of many of our bureaus, divisions, and 7,000 staff.
0:56:20
And so, bless you, even though there's not a line item, we are working to make sure that resources are really attributed to the areas where we need to focus.
0:56:30
I will mention one of our bureaus, the chronic disease bureau, the budget of that bureau is about $17,000,000 per year.
0:56:39
And we have other bureaus that we can follow-up with you as well that really align with the seven goals of Healthy NYC.
0:56:46
So we're doing our best to make sure that we have, that we use the resources we have and align them with the 7 drivers of lowered life expectancy so that we get to 83 years by 2030.
