Council Member Narcisse inquires about active surveys in communities with the most health deficits and how to address the findings. DOHMH representatives Michelle Morse and Gretchen Van Wye provide information on various survey tools and data collection methods used by the department.

  • Annual Community Health Survey covering 59 neighborhoods across the city
  • Surveys conducted in middle schools and high schools
  • Implementation of a new health panel for more frequent surveys on specific topics
  • Focus on gathering data on general health characteristics and opinions on various health issues
  • Emphasis on the importance of surveys and community engagement in shaping public health work
  • Brief discussion on racial equity and the shortened life expectancy of Black New Yorkers, highlighting systemic issues rather than individual blame

Is any active survey going around for the community that we see in the most deficit and how can we address those if you have those survey result?
Michelle Morse
0:59:37
Thank you so much for that question.
0:59:39
You are speaking public health.
0:59:41
We really appreciate.
0:59:43
We we find our surveys and community engagement work to be so critical for shaping our work.
0:59:48
And I'll also just tell you, I think our focus on racial equity and the very, very shortened life expectancy of black New Yorkers is important.
0:59:56
I also wanna make sure we acknowledge that that is not, the fault of black New Yorkers, that there are policy choices, resources, investments, etcetera, are the last thing we wanna do is to blame black New Yorkers.
1:00:08
So I do wanna just underline that this is about social and structural systems that have created shortened life expectancy for black New Yorkers over many, many generations.
1:00:19
And I would like to invite my colleague, Gretchen Van Wee
Gretchen Van Wye
1:00:22
to share a little more about the surveys, in the communities that we wanna prioritize.
1:00:28
Good morning again.
1:00:30
Every year, we have something called the community health survey that we field.
1:00:34
This is a very robust, survey that allows us to identify at 59 neighborhoods across the city what's happening in terms of the health of New Yorkers.
1:00:45
We also do surveys in the schools, in the middle schools, in the high schools, and we complement this with, a new a fairly new tool, that's a health panel that we do surveys of many times a year.
1:00:57
So we're broadly looking at general characteristics of health, and we're also asking people for their opinions on different kinds of things and going deeper on certain topics.
1:01:06
We can I'm happy to get you a longer list of what all of those tools are.
Mercedes Narcisse
1:01:10
Yeah.
1:01:10
Because I'm interested in all the chronic illnesses that we face in our community, having hospital closing in our communities, not facing you know the only, I'm not going there because that's another subject for the, downstate but anyway, so thank you and, looking forward for that.
1:01:29
Thanks.
1:01:29
Thanks, chair.
