Efforts to raise awareness and improve health education implementation

NYC Public Schools is actively working to improve health education implementation and raise awareness about its importance. Various initiatives have been launched to support this goal.
- Renewed commitment to student wellness and focus on sex ed task force recommendations
- Release of informational materials in fall 2024, including results of a 4-year research study
- Development of 3 videos showing health education in action at elementary, middle, and high school levels
- Materials made available on NYC Public Schools website and included in ongoing communication with districts, principals, and teachers

We are continuously seeking ways to raise awareness of the gaps in implementation that persist in providing health education to students.

Given our chancellor's renewed commitment to student wellness, we aim to continue to focus and commit to the programs that we had begun as part of the sex ed task force recommendations to build more robust sexual health education for New York City public school students.

As part of our efforts to increase understanding and raise awareness about the importance of health education among both educators and the public, we released a set of informational materials for a broad audience in fall 2024.

This includes information on the results of a 4 year research study funded by New York Community Trust Grant and conducted by an external evaluation firm about the impact of health education on student health in New York City.

In addition to the research results, we also developed and released a set of 3 videos that show health education in action, at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

By making these materials available on the New York City Public Schools website and including them as part of ongoing communication, the districts, principals, and teachers, our goal is to provide concrete next steps for families, school leaders, and others who want to ensure that students are receiving the benefits of quality high quality health education in their schools and districts.
