HIV education requirements and curriculum update in NYC schools

NYC Public Schools have implemented rigorous HIV education requirements and recently updated their HIV curriculum. The new curriculum, 'Growing Up and Staying Safe', was launched in fall 2023 after an extensive development process.
- NYC requires annual HIV lessons from K-12, with 5 lessons in K-6 and 6 lessons in 7-12
- The new curriculum is student-centered, culturally responsive, and LGBTQ inclusive
- It includes materials for English language learners, teacher training, and family education resources
- An agreement with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene ensures regular curriculum updates
