Council Member Julie Menin inquires about the factors the agency considers when determining if a complaint warrants a full investigation. Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga explains the agency's approach to investigating complaints and conducting broader investigations.
- Every complaint received is investigated
- Factors considered include whether there's a violation of the law and how many workers are impacted
- The agency aims for broader investigations to address workplace-wide issues rather than individual cases
- Some complaints may not involve actual violations, leading to worker education or referrals to other agencies

Absolutely.

Now what factors is the agency utilizing when they determine that a complaint then results, in a full blown investigation?
Vilda Vera Mayuga
0:16:40
So every investigate every complaint that we receive, we do investigate it.
0:16:47
So that's that's the first thing.
0:16:48
And then it's going to vary.
0:16:50
It's going to depend.
0:16:51
We are going to look in terms of, is there a violation of the law?
0:16:57
Is the is it only 1 worker that is impacted or multiple workers?
0:17:03
We are looking at broader investigations to make sure that the company compensates all of the workers' harm and comes into compliance as that we don't do it 1 by 2.
0:17:12
Harm and comes into compliance as that we don't do it 1 by 1.
0:17:14
Right?
0:17:15
We can take them all in and look into any issues that are workplace wide.
0:17:17
And certainly we have received also some complaints where the worker may feel that there is a violation of the law, but there isn't.
0:17:32
So we will take the time as another opportunity to educate and make sure that if there's a proper referral that is necessary because maybe it's a violation of another law but that we don't enforce, we can also tell the worker where to go to resolve their complaints.
