So now they heard it on the record here.
2:09:21
Have you received any feedback from community members?
2:09:24
Have you engaged community members on the How Many Stops Act?
Michael Gerber
2:09:28
Have I heard I I have not heard directly back from community members.
2:09:31
No.
2:09:32
I have offered on multiple occasions to meet with, advocates and advocacy groups to talk about the How Many Stops Act.
Rita Joseph
2:09:38
And what was the response?
Michael Gerber
2:09:40
They have not taken me up on that yet.
Rita Joseph
2:09:42
And can you figure out why?
Michael Gerber
2:09:44
I hope they will be with me about it.
2:09:45
I'd like to talk
Rita Joseph
2:09:46
It's a trust issue.
2:09:47
Just like I don't trust because of my boys when they step outside.
2:09:50
I'm worried about them.
2:09:51
I'm sure across the city, the parents, and as an educator, I felt the same way about the students that I taught, that coming to school was about the same experience.
2:10:00
So that perception has to change, that trust has to be gained.
2:10:03
And over the summer, I had an incident with chief Madri.
2:10:06
He had to come to the district to apologize to my young people, because NYPD came and trampled over my young people at a basketball game.
2:10:14
And some of my colleagues would never understand that.
2:10:16
You ask young people to work with you.
2:10:18
We ask young people to trust them, but yet you come and violate that space.
2:10:22
You have to do right.
2:10:24
By imposing trauma on young people, we have to do we have to right the wrong.
2:10:28
Right?
2:10:28
We have to make it right.
2:10:30
Right?
2:10:30
So maybe that's why they're not meeting with you because there's no trust, and I told commissioners to do it the same thing.
2:10:35
He's like, chair, I I I create all these great program.
2:10:38
No kids show up.
2:10:39
They don't trust you.
2:10:40
So you have to build better messengers.
2:10:42
And as you're doing this, you have to start talking talking to young people.
