The practice commonly known as stop and frisk is an investigative technique where police officers stop, question, and search an individual suspected of being involved in a crime in circumstances where the officer otherwise lacks evidence to establish probable cause needed for arrest.

For such stops to comply with constitutional standards of the 4th Amendment, an officer must have a reasonable suspicion the person has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a felony or misdemeanor offense.
