Council Member Gale A. Brewer asks Matt Jozwiak from Rethink Food how they make their numbers work despite low funding. Jozwiak explains their cost-effective approach to meal provision in shelters.

  • Rethink Food operates at $9.50 to $10 per day per meal
  • The organization operates at a loss but sees it as cost-effective compared to alternatives
  • Their approach aims to provide better food quality while reducing overall costs in the emergency food system

I have one question for for you.
3:18:47
So, I obviously said, as council member Juan did, we should work with you.
3:18:53
I think I said it probably out of turn, which is my norm.
3:18:56
But my question is, how do you make the numbers work?
3:18:59
Are you able to make the numbers work despite the low numbers?
Matt Jozwiak
3:19:03
Yes.
3:19:04
We can operate between, the lowest we've been able to go is between is around 9.50 to $10 a day.
3:19:11
We do this at a loss for our organization, council member.
3:19:15
Our organization will lose money, but the way that we look at it is if we make better food for 50ยข that we lose on that meal, then we don't have to feed them down the street for $5 a person.
3:19:26
And so the math makes sense for us.

Thank you very much.
