Council Member Farah Louis introduces two pieces of legislation: one expanding pay and employment equity data reporting for city contractors, and another requiring annual reporting on suicides in New York City. She explains the importance of these bills in advancing economic opportunity and addressing the mental health crisis.

  • Intro 1161 expands reporting on pay and employment equity data for city contractors, building on previous pay equity legislation.
  • Intro 1162 requires the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to report annually on suicides, including demographic data to better target resources.
  • Louis urges her colleagues to support both measures.

Good afternoon, colleagues.

Today, I'm proud to to introduce 2 pieces of legislation that represent vital steps forward in our commitment to advancing economic opportunity to the workforce that drives New York City and making strides to address our far reaching mental health crisis, the first bill intro 1161 amends the administrative code to expand this critical reporting and analysis of pay and employment equity data for city contractors.
0:30:28
This legislation bills on the critical work this council accomplished last year with the passage of our pay equity package, including the passage of my bill that expanded pay and employment equity data across all city agencies.
0:30:41
Expanding our access to information, including contractors, this legislation uncovers previously un unprotected and overlooked classes of employees.
0:30:53
It ensures that more of the city's workforce is captured in year round data, enabling the council to conduct robust oversight and take bold steps towards closing pay gaps across racial, ethnic, and gender lines.
0:31:06
My second bill intro 1162 requires the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to report annually on suicides that occur in New York City.
0:31:14
While a sliver of information is published with other mortality data, it is not comprehensive enough to meet the needs of advocates and service providers.
0:31:23
By requiring data on age, ethnicity, gender, and other factors, we can better target resources to communities and populations most at risk.
0:31:32
I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting these measures.

Thank you.
