Council Member Sandy Nurse introduces a resolution calling on the New York Power Authority to increase its public renewable energy capacity targets to at least 15 gigawatts by 2030. She emphasizes the importance of this increase to meet climate goals and create green jobs.
- Current NYPA target of 3.5 gigawatts falls short of Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goals
- Achieving 15 gigawatts would create green union jobs, decarbonize the energy grid, and reduce energy costs
- Nurse urges fellow council members to sign on to the resolution

Thank you, majority leader.

Today, I am introducing a resolution calling on the New York Power Authority to increase its public renewable energy capacity targets to at least 15 gigawatts.

In its draft strategic plan, the power authority projected they could reach just 3.5 gigawatts of renewable energy, and this falls extremely short of the climate goals in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which commits New York to a net zero carbon economy by 2050 and a 100% zero emission electrical generation by 2040.

Achieving 15 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030 would create tens of thousands of green union jobs, decarbonize New York State's energy grid, and reduce energy cost for consumers as temperatures and energy bills rise.

And as we saw this year with wildfires in New York City, we really, really need to take action.

3.5 gigawatts just won't cut it.

I urge everyone to sign on to this resolution.
