Council Member Mercedes Narcisse inquires about the reasons for concentrating life sciences development in Manhattan rather than considering other parts of New York City. Cecilia Kushner from NYC Economic Development Corporation explains that the industry tends to cluster around medical research centers, which are primarily located in Manhattan, with some developments in Brooklyn.

  • The life sciences industry prefers to be near medical research centers and hospitals
  • Successful developments are centered around areas with long-term investment in scientific and medical research
  • Some life sciences development is occurring in downtown Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Thank you, chair.

One of my question, is there any reason particular reason you're not considering, others part of this I mean, part of the city instead of Manhattan?
1:21:01
Because some of the good problems can go to some other part of New York City.
1:21:06
And is there any reason that you're not considering other parts of the city to build?
1:21:12
Because we would love some of the problems to spread out.
Cecilia Kushner
1:21:15
That's a really good question.
1:21:18
So what we found over, about close to a decade of investment in life science is that this industry wants to cluster around medical research centers, many of which are located around the First Avenue corridor in Manhattan.
1:21:33
There's also some life science developments on the west side, around some really large hospitals on the west side, as well as Columbia Hospital, up to the north, in West Harlem.
1:21:44
There is a little bit of life science development in downtown Brooklyn in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in part because there is production space available and also large hospitals in downtown Brooklyn.
1:21:54
So what we found is that the industry is most successful and
UNKNOWN

can be attracted in places that really center
Cecilia Kushner
1:21:57
around scientific research, and long term investment.
1:21:58
So places that really center around scientific research and long term investment in medical research that the city, and private sector has done, over multiple decades.
1:22:07
And this is really what drives, the location of this project here in Cubes
Mercedes Narcisse

Bay.
1:22:12
Thank you, chair.
1:22:13
Thank you.
