Council Member Powers discusses the relocation of Hunter College dormitories with a CUNY representative. They provide details on the agreement and timeline for the new dorm facilities.

  • New dorms will be available in August of the current year to accommodate students moving from Brookdale.
  • The new dorm will have around 950 rooms, replacing all the dorms currently at Hunter Brookdale.
  • All Hunter students will have the opportunity to get a dorm room at the new location.
  • Special accommodations will be made for students who were at the location when the project was announced two years ago.
  • Communication about the new dorm opportunities has been made available to all students.

Okay.
1:13:45
I support that.
1:13:46
Just be on the record with that.
1:13:50
I wanna talk about the dorms.
1:13:51
I know we have CUNY here, and then I'm just gonna try to save Kevin Riley from a long day, but appreciate it.
1:13:58
We had a discussion early on about what's the existing user there, which is the dormitories for Hunter College in CUNY, which currently reside in the campus, though I think probably far out of the far out of the modern condition that many would wanna live in.
1:14:12
I don't think they've been updated since my my mother herself once lived in them as a nursing student.
1:14:18
And we know there's an agreement, that students would be, made their space space would be available for students, in my district at 51st and Lexington Avenue.
1:14:28
I just wanna recognize and appreciate CUNY for taking that as a serious issue.
1:14:34
And I have to go to Thanksgiving dinner, so I have to look at some Hunter students in the eyes.
1:14:38
But can you just share with us exactly the status of that timing of it and just the details of that agreement?
UNKNOWN
1:14:45
We are involved in, conversations with the with the, owner of that project.
1:14:52
We have, we have an agreement with them.
1:14:54
We're tweaking it as we go along.
1:14:57
But, the bottom line is our these these new dorms will be available, in August of this year, to accommodate, our students moving from Brookdale.
Keith Powers
1:15:06
Got it.
1:15:06
And the students are there today would move over there this fall, or is that for new students moving in and would move directly there versus Brookdale?
UNKNOWN
1:15:16
All students related that go to Hunter will have the opportunity to take to get a dorm room at this location.
1:15:21
Certainly, we'll accommodate all the students that are there.
1:15:24
We will also make, special accommodations for those that were at the location when we announced the project 2 years ago.
Keith Powers
1:15:31
And and how many rooms are we talking about total right now?
UNKNOWN
1:15:34
We're well, the whole project at, the dorm will the new dorm will be around 950, dorms, that will replace all of the dorms that are presently at Hunter Brookdale.
Keith Powers
1:15:46
Got it.
1:15:46
Okay.
1:15:46
Appreciate that.
1:15:48
And have students who are there today been notified about this?
1:15:51
And have they have what's the communication been to, to to CUNY campus community?
UNKNOWN
1:16:00
All the students yes.
1:16:01
We have a standard, communication that it makes available the opportunity to get a dorm room, to all of our students.
1:16:07
And certainly, those that are there will get special attention, to make sure that they're aware of the opportunity.
1:16:12
Most of them are already aware.
Keith Powers
1:16:14
Okay.
1:16:15
Thank you.
1:16:15
Yeah.
1:16:16
Just, last few.
1:16:18
We talked council member Riley talked about the retail.
1:16:21
I heard the answer, but I wanted to maybe just get a more specific thought process on exactly what type of retail.
1:16:27
You are completely right.
1:16:28
It's an area with a noticeable lack of went from 23rd to, I don't know, like, 34th Street.
1:16:34
So some spots in between.
1:16:36
Noticeable lack of open space I mean, retail space.
1:16:41
I would encourage food, eating, things that would be available for the people that are working there.
1:16:47
But is that is that what you're envisioning, or are there other uses that you're envisioning?
Julieanne Herskowitz
1:16:51
That's exactly right.
