Council Member Powers inquires about the retail development plans for the campus, and Julieanne Herskowitz provides details on the envisioned retail spaces.

  • Food and beverage establishments are a priority, considering the number of people in the area and future students and workers.
  • Ground floor spaces in the two life sciences buildings on First Avenue and 26th Street will be used to encourage more retail.
  • Health and Hospitals will have healthy concessions, including a healthy cafe and a pharmacy within their ground floor space near 26th Street.
  • The goal is to make the entire campus more active, permeable, and accessible than it is currently.

That's exactly right.

Food and beverage, I think, is definitely a priority considering the number of people that are already in the area looking for a good place to eat, but then also all the students and and workers who will be operating of the Spark Hips Bay campus.

In particular, with the two life sciences building, so on First Avenue and then also on 26th Street, we have a real opportunity to influence and encourage more retail within the ground floor of those spaces.

As I also noted before too, as part of health and hospitals leasehold, they will also have healthy concessions, so a healthy cafe, and then a pharmacy within their ground floor space, closer to 26th Street.

So really excited to really make the entire campus more active and and more permeable as we know and accessible than it is today.
