Kaitlyn Schuster, representing SEIU Local 32BJ, expresses support for the proposed rezoning and development at 2185 Coyle Street. The union backs the project due to the developer's commitment to creating prevailing wage jobs and the addition of new housing units, including affordable options.

  • The project is expected to create 5-6 new property service jobs with prevailing wages and benefits.
  • The development will introduce 430 new housing units, with at least 25% being income-restricted for low to middle-income residents.
  • SEIU Local 32BJ emphasizes the importance of creating both affordable housing and good jobs that meet industry standards in New York City.

Alright.
2:07:07
Hello again, Tara Riley.
2:07:09
Hello, council member Narcisse.
2:07:11
My name, is Caitlin Shuster.
2:07:13
I'm here today representing SEIU Local 32 BJ.
2:07:17
32 BJ is the largest union of property service workers in the country, representing over a 175,000 members across our 13 states, including tens of thousands of commercial property service workers, security officers, and residential building staff in New York City.
2:07:33
Our union is here today in support of the proposed rezoning and development at 2185 Coyle Street.
2:07:40
32 BJ is happy to show support for developers who invest in the communities where they build.
2:07:45
I'm glad to report that the developers of this proposal have made a credible commitment, to creating prevailing wage jobs for the workers who will permanently staff the future development at 2185 Coyle Street.
2:07:57
We estimate that this rezoning will allow for the creation of 5 to 6 new property service jobs.
2:08:03
Good jobs like these mean prevailing wages, meaningful benefits, and a pathway to the middle class for local community members, who tend to fill such positions.
2:08:12
In addition to the important job creation that will come from this project as rents reach historic highs and housing availability reaches a historic low, 32 BJ recognizes the need for more housing to be built in every neighborhood of New York.
2:08:25
This project will introduce 430 new units of housing to Brooklyn Community District 15, at least a quarter of which will be income restricted and available to low to middle income residents.
2:08:36
So the cost of living rises and working New Yorkers struggle to stay in their homes.
2:08:40
It's more important now than ever to create affordable housing and good jobs, which uphold the industry standard in the city.
2:08:46
For all of these reasons, we're happy to be here in support of the project.
2:08:50
Thank you so much for your time.
