Council Member Aviles introduces two resolutions aimed at strengthening protections for immigrants at the state level.
- Presents a resolution calling for the passage of the New York for All Act, which would regulate the disclosure of immigration status by state and local government entities
- Introduces a resolution supporting the Access to Representation Act, which would establish a right to counsel in immigration court proceedings
- Emphasizes the urgency of passing these state-level legislations in the current session

Lastly, the committee on immigration will hear 2 bills that I'm proud to be a cosponsor of.

The first is pre considered reconsidered resolution sponsored by council member Shahana Hanif that calls on the New York state legislature to pass and the governor to sign New York for all act, which would prohibit and regulate the discovery and disclosure of immigration status by New York state and local government entities.

The second is pre considered resolution sponsored by council member Crystal Hudson that calls on the New York state legislature to pass and the governor to sign the access to representation act, which establishes a right to counsel in immigration court proceedings and provides for the administration thereof.

The committee on immigration passed different versions of these resolutions in in 2022 and 2023, respectively, and our renewed consideration of these bills underscores the urgency of passing the same state level legislation this session.

I'm grateful to council members Hanif and Hudson for introducing their bills and focusing relentlessly on safety and justice for immigrant New Yorkers and all New Yorkers.
