Council Member Menin and Commissioner Mayuga discuss the proposed Intro 1081 and current practices for notifying workers about their complaints.
- DCWP supports codifying the 30-day worker notification requirement into law
- Current practice is to notify workers of complaint receipt within 30 days or less
- Notification is nearly instantaneous for complaints filed through the online portal or by phone
- A small number of mailed complaints may take longer to process due to physical mail handling

So for the new lines that you that that are in the January plan, the will they cover these laws or no?
0:17:11
They're more for the hotel licensing, the broker fee bill, financial literacy.
0:17:16
Correct.
0:17:16
3 areas.
0:17:17
Okay.
0:17:17
Understood.
0:17:20
In terms of, you know, you mentioned in your testimony, about 1081.
0:17:29
So the goal obviously is always to protect workers and to protect against any type of retaliation.
0:17:39
In terms of so your view is that this would codify notification to workers within 30 days.
0:17:48
We obviously don't wanna do anything to, in any way, jeopardize workers in terms of from the employer standpoint, so I'm fine with a friendly amendment to that.
0:17:58
Any other thoughts on codifying the 30 day worker notification part of the bill?
Vilda Vera Mayuga
0:18:05
Fully support that, council member.
0:18:07
I mean, it is, part of our practice to notify workers of receipt of their complaint within the 30 days, even less than that in practice right now.
0:18:16
So we are, in favor of codifying that practice into law.
Julie Menin
0:18:23
And how and at what point are you notifying a complainant that their complaint has been received?
Vilda Vera Mayuga
0:18:32
It's pretty instantaneous right now because of technology again.
0:18:37
Especially if somebody files a complaint through our portal, there's an automatic message that they receive that assigned assigns them a number so that they can use that number for any questions they may have.
0:18:49
If they do it by phone, then they're already speaking with a live person who will provide that information as well.
0:18:56
So it's pretty instantaneous at the moment.
0:18:57
I mean, there's a very small number that we instantaneous at the moment.
0:18:58
I mean, there's a very small number that we may receive on the mail, and then we'll those will take a little longer because of snail mail, but it's pretty instantaneous right now.
Julie Menin
0:19:09
Okay.
0:19:09
I also wanna mention we've been joined by council member Osei.
0:19:12
And just for his benefit, I wanna mention that the commissioner just mentioned I don't know if you heard when when you were walking in.
0:19:18
There are gonna be additional lines, 15 lines.
0:19:21
Right?
0:19:21
15?
0:19:22
Correct?
0:19:22
15 lines?
0:19:23
Or you're not committing to the note?
0:19:25
I don't remember the exact number.
0:19:27
They're they're getting additional lines at DCWP that are in the January plan that are meant to implement the hotel licensing bill, the broker bill, and financial literacy.
0:19:36
So just wanna make sure you heard that and
Christopher Leon Johnson
0:19:38
And Carlos let me know about that too.
