First Deputy Commissioner Margaret Forgione explains DOT's process for coordinating repaving with new street designs and safety improvements, as well as the logistics of speed hump installation.
- DOT views each repaving as an opportunity to implement new street designs and safety projects.
- The resurfacing division coordinates closely with other departments to align paving schedules with planned safety improvements.
- Paving crews and speed hump crews operate separately due to different skill sets and work paces.
- Speed hump installation typically occurs after repaving is completed.
- DOT has increased its speed hump installations in response to council and community requests.

Yes.
1:16:09
So it's an excellent question.
1:16:11
So every time we mill and pave, it's an opportunity to have a blank slate on the street.
1:16:16
And so, deputy commissioner Beaton works very closely with our resurfacing division to coordinate any new street designs during repaving.
1:16:25
And in fact, sometimes he'll ask that division, hey, when are you planning on paving so and such a street?
1:16:30
Because we'd really like to have a new safety project.
1:16:33
So we coordinate very carefully, and whenever we mark, it's an opportunity to put down a new street in effect.
1:16:40
So that is something we do each and every time.
1:16:42
We also, our our paving crew is different than our speed hump crew, for reasons probably too tedious to go into.
1:16:51
It doesn't make sense to do that at the same time.
1:16:53
The speed hump crew comes after the paving crew.
1:16:56
Paving crew is just moving, moving, moving.
1:16:58
Speed hump crew takes a little bit longer, and they have a specialized skill, so they come in afterwards.
1:17:03
So we don't actually have to unite those together.
1:17:06
So what I would instead say is if there are roads that you need speed humps, we want to evaluate them as quickly as possible.
1:17:14
At this body and the chair's urging.
1:17:16
We have been doing more speed humps than we ever have before.
1:17:19
We're doing Yes.
1:17:20
We're training
