Council Member Chris Banks inquires about the lack of street regulation and maintenance in the Gateway Mall area of the 42nd Council District. He highlights issues such as the absence of alternate side parking, street cleaning, and the poor condition of streets.

  • DOT First Deputy Commissioner Margaret Forgione explains that the area was not built to city standards and is not yet owned by the city.
  • A contract with DDC is in place to address these issues so the city can take over the streets.
  • Once the city owns the streets, they can be included in sanitation sweeping rotations and have street cleaning regulations implemented.

Thank you, madam chair, and, thank you to the administration.
1:25:22
I have some district related questions, strictly pertaining to, the Gateway Mall area in the, 42nd Council District.
1:25:33
We for some reason, none of the streets are regulated.
1:25:37
There's no alternate alternate side parking, no street cleaning that takes place.
1:25:44
And I wanna know, is there a plan to regulate the streets?
1:25:48
It's been like that for quite a couple of years, since, you know, that is the, we've had a lot of development, that has taken place on that side of, the district.
1:25:59
And if obviously, folks are getting used to not having to move their cars, but we need the streets cleaned.
1:26:05
So I wanted to find out exactly what's the plan by DOT to assist, with or or or possibly regulate those streets back there so they can get the alternate side parking.
1:26:16
And, also, too, the streets are in disrepair.
1:26:21
We definitely need a, assistance with having those streets repaired back there, all up and down Elton, Schroders, Vandalia.
1:26:29
So we definitely want you to possibly take a look into, see how we can get those streets regulated and the street repairs.
Margaret Forgione
1:26:38
Thank you for the question.
1:26:39
It's a really important question.
1:26:40
So, over recent years, we have been working with HPD on this development.
1:26:46
The the area was built, but it is not built exactly to city standards.
1:26:52
So we have not yet taken those streets, and and we could clarify offline exactly which streets we're talking about, but we have not taken them into our ownership.
1:27:01
So if there are asphalt repairs that are needed, that is not something we would do if the city doesn't own them.
1:27:07
Okay.
1:27:08
But my understanding is that there is now a contract with DDC to address all of those issues so then the city can then take them those streets over.
1:27:17
But we can offline, we can confirm everything with you.
Chris Banks
1:27:21
Right.
Margaret Forgione
1:27:21
And then, just as far as sanitation sweeping, they may not do it if the streets are not owned by the city.
1:27:26
But one we can check with them as well.
1:27:29
But once they are owned, of course, that can be discussed putting them in the rotation and then putting up street cleaning regulation.
Chris Banks
1:27:34
We definitely wanna have a sidebar on that so we can get briefed and just have more conversation on it.
Margaret Forgione
1:27:40
Good.
