Commissioner Lojan introduces the concept of 'snow equity', a new approach to ensure equal snow removal service across all city streets. This initiative represents a significant change in how the department prioritizes snow removal.
- Eliminates the old system of primary, secondary, and tertiary streets
- Every street is now on a route and can be serviced simultaneously
- Includes servicing both car lanes and bike lanes at the same time
- Aims to provide safe travel for all New Yorkers during snow events
- Details of the initiative are outlined in borough-based snow plans submitted to the city council

Snow equity means that every street is on a route and every rock can be dispatched at the same time for snow operations as soon as conditions warrant it.

And it means servicing car lanes and bike bike lanes at the same time so that New Yorkers who use bicycles can get to work to do their work so that to do their work and continue to do so safely even as we open car lanes for emergency vehicles and others.

This is all outlined in department's borough based snow plans submitted to the city council at the end of September pursuant to local law 28, 2011.
