DSNY officials explain how surplus salt and brine are managed at the end of the snow season and how this affects budgeting for subsequent years.
- Surplus salt is kept on hand for the next snow season
- Most salt sheds are covered; those without covers are protected with tarps
- The surplus does not directly factor into the budget for the subsequent year
- The snow removal budget is set based on a 5-year average of actual spending
- Having surplus salt does not result in budget cuts for the following year
- Replenishment of supplies counts as an expenditure in the current year and factors into future budget calculations

I'd like to recognize council member Banks for joining us.
0:20:41
How much is spent you so I was gonna ask how much you spend on these alternatives, but you're saying you don't really yeah.
0:20:47
No.
0:20:47
We tap into that.
0:20:48
Right.
0:20:48
Alright.
0:20:49
Next question.
0:20:51
What happens to surplus salt or brine that is not used at the end of the snow season?
0:20:55
Does it go back into the storage pile?
0:20:57
Or
Javier Lojan
0:20:58
Yeah.
0:20:58
So, thankfully, most of our salt sheds are covered.
0:21:03
The ones that are outdoor that don't have covers, we put tarps over them.
0:21:07
But, yeah, we we just keep them on hand for the next sell season, and and that's what we'll do with it.

How does this factor into the budget cost in the subsequent year when you have a surplus sold?
Javier Lojan
0:21:19
Sorry.
0:21:19
Do you wanna take this one?
Joseph Antonelli
0:21:22
So the the short answer is it doesn't factor in.
0:21:25
The budget each year is set based on the 5 year, average of actual spending.
0:21:31
So if we have surplus sold, our budget's not cut or anything.
0:21:33
It's just based on what we spent in the in the prior 5 years.
Shaun Abreu
0:21:38
And, when you replenish, is that also part of the 5 year?
Joseph Antonelli
0:21:42
Correct.
0:21:43
Yeah.
0:21:43
So so when we do the replenishing, that counts as an expenditure in that year and that would factor into the 5 year average moving forward.
