Council Member Hudson questions the prioritization of light replacements and other maintenance issues at OACs, particularly in relation to safety concerns for older adults. NYC Aging representatives clarify their approach to maintenance prioritization and commit to ensuring that critical lighting issues are addressed promptly.

  • NYC Aging acknowledges that some lighting replacements may be deferred if they don't impede safe functioning
  • Representatives clarify that the focus is often on upgrading to more appropriate, modern lighting systems
  • Critical lighting issues that affect safety are prioritized
  • NYC Aging commits to ensuring that lighting replacements that impact safe functioning, especially for older adults with mobility impairments, are given higher priority

Okay.
2:14:12
Great.
2:14:12
And sorry.
2:14:13
I I wanna acknowledge that we've also been joined by council member Schulman.
2:14:17
In your testimony, you said that some issues may be addressed later when they do not impede the safe functioning of the center, such as repainting needs or light replacements.
2:14:29
I would think that light replacements, would impede safe functioning of a site, especially when you're talking about older adults not being able to clearly see where they're going, especially if they have mobility impairments or or use any type of assistance.
2:14:44
Can you maybe just address that or maybe commit to ensuring that Sure.
2:14:48
Light replacements Yeah.
2:14:49
Are prioritized in the future?
Ryan Murray
2:14:51
And and council member, I think the the spirit of that is also to indicate, like, you know, there's sometimes, I get a lot of notes on these kind of things.
2:14:59
The replay the changing of the type of light, right, to be, more up to what is appropriate in buildings now.
2:15:06
Like, the light might be there, but you might need to swap it out for something else.
2:15:10
That's the spirit of it.
Crystal Hudson
2:15:11
Okay.
Ryan Murray
2:15:11
It may also be in an area where, older adults may not, frequent.
2:15:17
So, yes, of course, lighting is important to feeling safe, being seeing what's around you, and where there are those cases, that obviously is a priority.
2:15:25
But I think the spirit is there's some things that are, like, change the lights to make it better, and I don't wanna get the wrong lighting.
2:15:34
I don't wanna stay it on record.
2:15:36
The wrong fluorescent lighting that is appropriate right now, but swapping those out would be something that is important, but not critical today.
Crystal Hudson
2:15:45
Okay.
2:15:45
I appreciate the clarification.
2:15:47
I'm gonna turn it back to council member Banks.
2:15:49
Chair Banks.
Chris Banks
2:15:50
Thank you, chair Hudson.
