Council Member Narcisse inquires about the deployment of mobile outreach units and Street Health Outreach and Wellness (SHOW) vans. Dr. Schatz provides information on the funding, locations, and effectiveness of these mobile harm reduction efforts.

  • $2,200,000 is budgeted for SHOW vans in fiscal years 2024 and 2025
  • SHOW vans are deployed at Bellevue (2 vans), Lincoln (1 van), and Elmhurst (1 van) hospitals
  • In calendar year 2024, SHOW vans had over 13,000 patient encounters
  • Vans are strategically placed based on demographics, overdose rates, and community needs
  • The vans provide a range of services, including harm reduction supplies and referrals to care
Mercedes Narcisse

And we have to know about the reality.
1:04:21
Some of them just watch for that, knowing that we can get we cannot get the data that we need to make the right decision at a certain time, unfortunately.
1:04:30
But now the collaboration, I hope, is better.
1:04:33
Even with the clinics, like, if they can have some numbers, I think the kind of not working together, the collaboration was missing with the clinic.
1:04:44
Let's say if I'm on Elmhurst Hospital, so I have to know which areas that which clinics that they go to that nearby that I can call and then get some answers.
1:04:54
And, we don't double on the medication.
1:04:59
Thank you.
1:05:00
H and H also deploys mobile outreach units and street health outreach and wellness events.
1:05:08
To what extent are settlement funds supporting this mobile, harm reduction efforts?
1:05:14
And how are you tracking their reach and effectiveness in connecting underserved populations to care?
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:05:26
Thank you once again for your thoughtful question.
1:05:28
Show vans are something that's very exciting, and it allows us to extend outside of the hospital and reach out into the community, earning their trust where they are and providing whatever direct services we can.
1:05:37
It's very hard to track a lot of the services that they might provide, whether it's, like, a banana or an apple or just someone who cares, but there is a lot that we look at.
1:05:46
And so just to answer your question for fiscal year 2024 and 2025, $2,200,000 are budgeted to the show vans, which are at Bellevue.
1:05:54
Lincoln has 2, Woodhall has 1, and Elmhurst has another.
1:05:59
And they're attached to, the facility's safety net housing, safety net clinics, which, really prioritize housing.
1:06:07
So there's a brick and mortar and then there's a van associated with it.
1:06:10
Of course, they can refer to our addiction services, but this is part of our medical ambulatory colleagues that
UNKNOWN
1:06:15
they're really attached to, and that's
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:06:15
where the physicians come from.
1:06:15
In calendar year 2024, Chauvans had physicians come from.
1:06:19
In calendar year 2024, Chauvin's had over 35100 encounters, and I can tell you that those are there's a lot of repeated encounters.
1:06:27
Takes not one encounter, 2 encounters, but 10 encounters before you earn the trust and help them get referred.
1:06:35
13, I'm 13,000.
1:06:37
13,000 encounters, for calendar year 2024.
1:06:40
I was gonna
Linda Lee
1:06:40
say you're not giving yourself enough credit.
UNKNOWN
1:06:42
Yeah.
1:06:42
I'm sorry.
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:06:43
I like to set the expectation here and then, you know, we're gonna end up here.
Mercedes Narcisse
1:06:46
You rather lower
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:06:46
than losing your confidence.
Mercedes Narcisse
1:06:48
Exaggerated it, we're gonna cut you and
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:06:50
say And if you want patient stories, those are some of the, best, stories that we hear because they really, treasure that kind of respect connection, and we earn their trust and then hopefully get them referred.
Mercedes Narcisse
1:07:02
So my colleague's gonna do a follow-up.
1:07:03
Just one second.
Linda Lee
1:07:04
I just had a quick question.
1:07:05
So how are you determining where these show vans go?
1:07:09
Based on what?
Mercedes Narcisse
1:07:11
How are you determining that?
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:07:13
Yeah.
1:07:14
I'm being corrected.
1:07:14
There's 2 at Bellevue and one at Lincoln.
1:07:16
I apologize, for for that.
Mercedes Narcisse
1:07:19
No.
1:07:19
Where they go, I think, the super
UNKNOWN
1:07:21
Yeah.
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:07:21
So where we go is we look at, the the demographics of the area where the overdoses are happening and if there's a specific, hot, you know, hot you know, area where there's people that is there's an acute, increase as well as, you know, the community, asking or needing needing it.
1:07:37
So we'll identify those kind of areas and, sit there for a bit.
Linda Lee
1:07:40
And how often is that data updated?
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:07:44
I'd have to get back to you on that.
UNKNOWN
1:07:46
Mhmm.
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:07:49
It's important So
Mercedes Narcisse
1:07:50
if you have a crisis, can someone call and they can come to any part or it has there's a restriction?
Dr. Daniel Schatz
1:07:57
There's a specific location where where they are set up, but if we hear of incidents nearby one of the vans and there's really an increased need, we'll have them kind of, go into the community and, go over there.
1:08:08
But it's important that the vans are at a particular location because a lot of these patients kind of learn to expect where to get those care that care and and to receive it.
