We are clearly indebted to all the firefighters and emergency workers who were so successful in using their determination and ingenuity to contain these fires.

But we have to get to a point where these threats are addressed before they become harmful to more people or they are beyond safe containment.

That's why I have I sponsored a pre considered bill that we are hearing today.

This bill would require the parks department, in consultation with FDNY and other appropriate city agencies, to develop a specific plan to mitigate the occurrences of wildfires in parks.

It would require the city to analyze how we can be even better equipped to prevent these fires and contain them quickly should they even occur.

Some of what would be part of this plan would involve analyzing how we can increase response times, increase fire prevention training for city workers, conduct better surveillance over fire prone areas of parkland, and improve enforcement against activities in parks that contribute to fires occurring in the first place.

The plan would have to be posted on the park's website, according to our legislation, and be updated regularly.

It is my hope that this bill will help to get the city ahead of the game in addressing what is a growing threat to the well-being of New Yorkers, to our climate, and to ensure that this threat is something we can contain before it's too late.
