Council Member Krishnan raises concerns about fire hydrant access in parks, particularly referencing an incident in Inwood. FDNY Chief John Esposito explains their strategies for sourcing water in various situations.
- Krishnan mentions a lack of fire hydrant access during a fire in Inwood
- He asks if certain areas need more fire hydrants placed
- Chief Esposito explains that while closer water sources are ideal, FDNY is well-trained in relaying water
- FDNY can use alternative water sources, such as drafting from rivers
- The department has strategies to deal with frozen hydrants and can pump water long distances if needed

And just my final two questions.
0:37:37
One was, you know, one thing that I'd mentioned before in the opening statement, I think it was in Inwood, where there wasn't there was a lack of access to fire hydrants to help with the situation.
0:37:48
And I asked for FDNY too.

How have you all thought about you know, are there certain areas, that you clearly need more fire hydrants placed?
0:37:57
How do you address this issue of these these will happen unexpectedly, but then, of course, the complication of not having fire hydrant access could make can exacerbate the issue.

Have you all thought about that?

So ideally, the the closer the water source is to the fire, the the easier it is.
0:38:14
But our people are very well trained in, relaying water.
0:38:19
In Inwood Park, we were able to draft, from the river and and put use water on the fire.
0:38:25
It's not uncommon that the closest source of water is, we're not able to use.
0:38:31
Earlier this week in Queens, We had a fire where the 2 closest hydrants were frozen, and we were able to quickly, access another hydrant and and put water on that fire.
0:38:44
So, obviously, the the closer the hydrant is to the fire, the the better that is, but our people are very well trained, to to get water, however we can get it.
0:38:54
We, draft water, we can relay water, and then, pump it a long way if, if we need to.
