Commissioner Do discusses the early data on the impact of congestion pricing on the taxi industry. While noting it's too early for a comprehensive assessment, he shares some initial positive indicators.

  • Taxi trips were up about 10% in the first week of congestion pricing compared to the same week in 2024
  • Potential factors include people choosing taxis over personal vehicles and reduced congestion allowing for more efficient trips
  • TLC will continue to analyze the impact and make data publicly available through the TLC fact book

While it's still too far too early to make an assessment on the impact of congestion pricing on the taxi industry, the early data is hopeful.
0:14:01
With taxi trips up about 10% in the first week, it was in effect compared to the same week in 2024, which is consistent with the general upward trend of taxi trips before congestion pricing went into effect.
0:14:15
As we continue to monitor the data, we may see that some people are choosing to take taxis rather than their personal vehicles in the Central Business District.
0:14:24
Reduced congestion allows taxis to complete more trips in shorter times.
0:14:29
The general increase in taxi trips is strong enough to overcome the impact of the small additional surcharge or, most likely, some combination of these factors.
0:14:39
TLC will continue to analyze the impact of congestion pricing on the taxi industry and all of our licensed industries as more data continues to accumulate.
0:14:50
And we will continue to show that data and all the data that I've mentioned today on the TLC fact book so that the public can monitor the industry trends and impacts for themselves.
