Council Member Schulman inquires about DOHMH's efforts to address the higher number of HIV/AIDS deaths among Black and Latino/Hispanic New Yorkers in medium to very high poverty areas. Sarah Braunstein explains DOHMH's approach:

  • All DOHMH programming is driven by the epidemiology of HIV and its disproportionate distribution in the city
  • They work with clinical institutions and community-based organizations in high-poverty or high-prevalence neighborhoods
  • Resources for both prevention and care/treatment are targeted to the people who need them most
  • DOHMH's strategy focuses on directing resources to the most affected communities and populations

Yeah.

Absolutely.

Our, the entire suite of our programming, both on the prevention side and on the care and treatment side is all driven by what we know to be the epidemiology of HIV and the disproportionate distribution of HIV in this city.

So we specifically work with clinical institutions, community based organizations based in high poverty, or high prevalence neighborhoods and areas, or who serve clients living in those areas to ensure that our resources, both prevention and care and treatment are targeted, to the people who need them most.
