Council Member Hudson inquires about cultural or linguistic gaps in the current availability of kinship care resources for older adults. A testifier from Legal Aid Society responds with insights.

  • Identified a potential cultural gap in understanding eligibility for kinship care resources
  • Some clients may not realize they qualify if they don't have formal guardianship arrangements
  • Suggestion to emphasize broader eligibility in outreach materials

And then can you identify any particular cultural or linguistic gap in the current availability of kinship care resources for older adults?
1:25:27
Or it doesn't have to be specifically related to kinship care, but just in general, any cultural or linguistic gaps that you've seen with clients that you serve?

No?

I'd say that there may be a cultural gap in their understanding of whether or not they have access to these resources.
1:25:48
I don't have specific examples but from what I've seen from certain clients they might not feel that they fit into the definition of kinship if they're not in a formal arrangement or they don't have formal guardianship that might prevent them from accessing these resources.

So it would be really beneficial that any material emphasizes that they should be able to access these services too.

Okay, great.
1:26:08
That's helpful.
1:26:09
And then the last question is, have you encountered barriers or have clients that you've served encountered barriers that you're aware of when seeking legal assistance or navigating custody and guardianship processes?
