Council Member Gale A. Brewer inquires about the staffing levels for food quality oversight at the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) compared to the Department for the Aging (DFTA). First Deputy Commissioner Jill Berry explains that many DHS staff have food-related responsibilities, including seven dedicated inspection staff.
- Brewer expresses concern that seven inspectors may not be sufficient compared to DFTA's staffing levels.
- Berry agrees to provide a comparison of staffing numbers between DHS and DFTA.
- The discussion highlights potential understaffing for food quality oversight at DHS.

But my question to start with is, my understanding is that at, DIFTA, there are more people, making sure that the process for food goes well than enough staff at DHS.
1:36:42
So I wanna maybe you discuss this, but how many people are doing this work at DHS?
1:36:47
And I don't know that you could compare it to DFTA because you probably don't have that data.
1:36:52
But how many people are actually doing this work at DHS?
Jill Berry
1:36:56
I mean, it that's it's a little bit of a hard question to answer because a lot of people have food as at least part of their responsibility at DHS.
1:37:04
The shelter operations staff are responsible for monitoring all aspects of the shelter and shelter operations including food, and that's the majority of the of the DHS staff.
1:37:18
We have DHS inspection staff.
1:37:21
I I mentioned earlier that there are seven of them that are responsible for doing the facility inspections.
Gale A. Brewer
1:37:27
I think the seven that is of concern compared to apparently, I don't know this, but DFTA has many more.
1:37:33
So are you requesting a new needs?
1:37:36
Do you not feel that you need more of that staff?
Jill Berry
1:37:40
Per chair Juan's question earlier about whether we're actually getting all of our inspections done, I believe we are.
1:37:48
But if we are not, then that would be a place where we would need to ask
Gale A. Brewer
1:37:51
for more information.
1:37:52
You get back to us compared to what DFTA is versus DHS?
1:37:57
Could you get back to us with those numbers?
1:37:59
Sure.
1:38:00
We could we
Jill Berry
1:38:00
can work with our colleagues at DFTA for what their staffing is.
Gale A. Brewer
1:38:03
Okay.
